Homemade Keto ‘Sugar-Free’ Light Maple Brown Sugar

Making this keto brown sugar is super simple. Brown sugar is simply sugar and molasses so making a Keto ‘Sugar-Free’ Light Brown Sugar is just as easy. This recipe is great when you’re trying to be super strict on Keto and may not want to use molasses. So, the solution is to use a keto-friendly maple syrup. It’s best to use this one as quickly as possible. While you can use other syrups if you want to experiment, but I do suggest avoiding those that sweeten with sucralose, which can raise your sugar levels.

Homemade Brown Sugar

I picked Lakanto Maple Flavored Sugar-Free Syrup because it’s sweetened with good sweeteners and does a fantastic job of tasting like maple syrup.

To get the deeper molasses caramel flavour, my secret ingredient is adding rum extract. Why? Because what in a main ingredient in making rum? Molasses. Sneaky right? So, by adding a touch adding rum extract you get that great molasses flavour without the molasses. Genius right? I know!

Keto Brown Sugar

Albeit, this Keto ‘Sugar-Free’ Light Brown Sugar recipe won’t get you the deep brown colour of brown sugar, but it will have the flavour, the stickiness, denseness of brown sugar. However, if you don’t want to use real rum extract, you can use imitation, or omit it altogether.

Nevertheless, it still tastes and works great. Most importantly, do not use real rum. It will only add too much liquid to your sugar and isn’t enough of a concentrated flavouring to really impact the taste of the final product.

It takes a few minutes for the molasses to blend into the sugar fully, keep mixing. Above all, trust the process. I use my stand mixer with my flex beater edge paddle attachment. It’s effective and easy. Alternatively, you can also use a fork, but admittedly, I have no patience for that.

Diabetes Friendly Brown Sugar

Finally, don’t forget to store your homemade Keto ‘Sugar-Free’ Light Brown Sugar just like the real thing, in an air-tight container & then it will last for months. Even the sugar free kind has the tendency to clump together.  To prevent this, make sure your container seals well and add a ceramic brown sugar softener or if you can stand the temptation, a slice of white bread or marshmallow in the container will keep the sugar dry.

Instructions

  • Combine 1 cup granulated erythritol or allulose with 1  tablespoon Lakanto Maple Flavored Sugar-Free Syrup and ½ teaspoon Rum extract in the bowl of a stand mixer. *Use imitation rum extract if you are alcohol free.
  • Blend on medium until ingredients are fully incorporated, 3-5 minutes.
